Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

The news about the death of singer Sinéad O’Connor was confirmed by RTÉ on Wednesday. The outlet shared the artist’s family statement, in which they requested privacy. No further details have been shared with the outlet or fans.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” the statement reads.

The Irish music legend gained popularity once she released her worldwide hit Nothing Compares 2 U. According to this source, the song was named “the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.” O’Connor had a long music career, with Rolling Stone naming her artist of the year in 1991, and being nominated for the Grammy three times.

The singer has also undergone difficult periods in her life. In 2022, she canceled all her upcoming shows following the death of her 17-year-old son, Shane, PageSix notes. Her representatives stated that it was a decision Sinéad “had to make for her own health and wellbeing.”

“We would like to respectfully announce that due to continuing grief over the tragic loss of her beloved son Shane earlier this year, Sinéad O’Connor will not be performing live in 2022,” her management team said in 2022.

According to this source, following her son’s death, Sinead opened up about losing Shane in a since-deleted tweet. “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.” she wrote.
