The Menendez Brothers are back in the spotlight since their conviction in 1996. The brothers are now 53 (Erik) and 56 (Lyle), and have been recently placed back been a large topic of discussion following the Netflix documentary that highlighted the 90’s case.
Kim Kardashian has also released a statement advocating for the release of the brothers, and a mass wave of public support for the same positioning. There is a petition that justifies the reasoning for a retrial based on new evidence presenting the brother’s claims of abuse.
The Beverly Press says that “Gascón added that the office may decide based on the evidence whether to seek a new sentence, a release from prison or a new trial.”
Were the Menendez Brother’s Guilty?
It seems as though the public is divided on whether or not the brothers deserve to be acquitted. There are Menendez brothers Netflix episodes that are said to be overly dramatized, and may lean to far into highlighting the brothers abuse endured from their father and less of the killings.
One outlier article that is in opposition of their release goes on to say” abuse does not justify or excuse a revenge killing. It may be a reason to reduce punishment. But killing someone isn’t self-defense unless you believe they’re about to kill you. That’s not the case with Lyle and Erik Menendez.” – The Free Press
