Chanel is getting rid of around 2.5 per cent of its workforce in the US amid “current economic challenges”.

January 23, 2025: Chanel is eliminating 70 roles in the US to adapt to current economic challenges.

The luxury brand, owned by Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, aims to adjust to the shifting economic environment.

Chanel stated, “We expect ebbs and flows in demand in any market.”

Matthieu Blazy Takes Over as Artistic Director

Matthieu Blazy, appointed as the new artistic director, replaced Virginie Viard in January 2025 after her departure in June 2023.

Additionally, Blazy expressed excitement about joining Chanel, stating, “I look forward to writing a new chapter with the teams.”

As a result, Chanel intends for Matthieu to remain with the brand for the long term.

Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president, hopes to collaborate with Blazy for 10 to 15 years or more.

However, Blazy signed a renewable contract, with two years to adjust to the brand’s authentic approach.

Pavlovsky believes Blazy’s vision will push the brand forward without rushing, emphasizing a steady, thoughtful pace.

Blazy will oversee 10 collections a year, including ready-to-wear lines and haute couture collections.

However, Blazy will not be involved with Chanel’s jewelry, watches, or fragrance divisions.

Chanel’s Growing Fashion Business

Pavlovsky noted that Chanel’s fashion business is now much larger than Bottega Veneta, requiring a collaborative approach.
