Experts advise the public about viewing safety ahead of this month’s solar eclipse. 

What day is the Eclipse 2024?

The first total solar eclipse of the year will take place on Monday, April 8. NASA said the eclipse will pass over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This is the first eclipse in North America since the Great American Eclipse in 2017.

The eclipse will begin on the Pacific coast of Mexico around 11:07 PDT. NASA estimates that 3.6 million people can view the eclipse, making it a more populous event than the 2017 eclipse. The April 2024 eclipse is estimated to last 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

During this year’s total solar eclipse, the sky will darken and feature a more active Sun than in 2017. Experts are sharing their advice for how to view the eclipse safely.

According to a related article, while this year’s eclipse does feature one moment where it is safe to look directly at the Sun, looking at an eclipse without proper eye protection “is never safe,” The only time to look safely at the Sun during an eclipse is “when the moon completely blocks the face of the Sun,”

Looking directly at the Sun “literally burns your eye,” and causes “permanent eye damage or blindness,” Because of this, anyone who wants to view this year’s eclipse will need solar eclipse glasses.
