James Gunn Defends The Batman II Delay: “Let the Guy Write the Screenplay”

Gunn Urges Patience for Reeves’ Script

June 21, 2025: James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, expressed frustration at fan impatience over The Batman II delays, urging critics to “get off Matt’s nuts.” Gunn emphasized that director Matt Reeves is fully committed, and the script—expected in June—is proceeding on schedule.

A Commitment to Quality Storytelling

Gunn reinforced that long waits between sequels are common in film history, citing titles like Alien, The Incredibles, and Top Gun. He stressed that the delay stems solely from finishing the screenplay—quality storytelling cannot be rushed.

Parallel Batman Paths at DC Studios

This sequel exists separately from Gunn’s new DCU “Brave and the Bold” Batman, which is scheduled for 2028. Gunn supports Reeves’ version as a distinct, canon-side narrative overseen by DC Studios.

Pattinson’s Concerns Over Age and Timing

Robert Pattinson, set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, has voiced anxiety about aging before filming begins. He called himself a “f‑ing old Batman” if delays continue much further.

Future Looks Promising

Gunn confirmed Reeves is “excited” and in regular contact about the project. With the script expected imminently, filming should begin late 2025 for a release now scheduled for October 1, 2027, constituting the Batman “Epic Crime Saga” trilogy.
