Cause Of Death

It came as a great shock to everyone when Lisa Marie Presley was pronounced dead at fifty-four years old. Now, five months later, the official autopsy and toxicology report findings have been released, and they have ruled that she died of natural causes. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner, Presley passed from a small bowel obstruction.

The official term for her cause of death is sequelae of small bowel obstruction. This means she died from former complications that over time led to a small bowel obstruction.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information defines a small bowel obstruction as “a surgical emergency caused by mechanical blockage of the bowel – its leading cause is scar-like tissue in the abdomen that can cause organs to stick together.”

Presley’s autopsy report states that this was a “common complication from a bariatric surgery procedure she had several years ago.” According to Mayo Clinic, Bariatric surgery “is a weight loss procedure that is usually conducted when other methods of weight loss have not worked or the patient has a serious medical condition.”

Her toxicology report revealed that she did have opioids in her system which she most likely received from her doctor after the surgery despite her past struggles with addiction. Opioids are known to cause constipation which can lead to bowel obstruction, and it has been said that Lisa Marie had been experiencing stomach pains earlier that day.
