Beloved Oscar-winning actress Dame Maggie Smith, or known to Harry Potter fans as Professor McGonagall, has passed away.
September 27, 2024- Oscar winning actress Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at 89 years old in a London hospital, according to a statement from her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
What Happened to Maggie Smith?
“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” Larkin and Stephens said in a statement issued through publicist Clair Dobbs.
Multiple actors and former co-stars of Smith have come forward to mourn her passing.

Actress Helen Mirren spoke with The Associated Press saying, “It’s a very sad day for the whole culture of theatre and cinema in England. She was one of the greatest actresses of the past century, without a doubt.”
Smith’s former co-star Daniel Radcliffe also spoke with The Associated Press saying, “She was incredibly kind to me on that shoot, and then I was lucky enough to go on working with her for another 10 years on the Harry Potter films.”
Maggie Smith Death Reason
The cause of death is currently unknown for Smith as her sons did not go into detail.
Smith has been in film since the early 60s’ and has also starred in the Harry Potter franchise and the hit-TV show “Downton Abbey.”
The author of the Harry Potter book series, J.K. Rowling, took to her X account to mourn Smith’s passing.
