Pensioners should enjoy an alcoholic tipple if they want to stay happy during retirement.
What experts think ?
The authors of the ‘Ageing and Mental Health’ peer-review journal think this is due to “alcohol’s ability to lift mood through socialisation”.
However, the team have advised against getting tipsy to adjust to retirement and it is “vital” those people seek support to avoid becoming heavy drinkers.
What is different doctors advice for drinkers?
Dr. Christina Sellers, associate professor of Social Work at Simmons University in the US, said: “Providing alternative coping mechanisms to heavy alcohol consumption for retirees is crucial.
“Addressing the combination of depressive symptoms and alcohol use among older adults is crucial too, especially considering their increased vulnerability to the negative effects of alcohol and underlying health conditions.”
Dr. Antonia Diaz-Valdes, of Universidad Mayor in Chile, added: “Drinking alcohol increases the risk of falls and other injuries and can lead to dependency – and the poor health that typically comes with it.”
