Queer Content

It’s official, ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ is the number one movie on Prime Video worldwide! It has also topped the collective chart which combines and television shows in its rankings.

The film has had a large following since its production was announced in 2019 which is the same year the book it’s based off of was published.

Written by Casey McQuiston, ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the President of United States, and Prince Henry, of the United Kingdom, as they go from enemies to forbidden lovers.

One of the things that’s drawn so many people to this film is that it is truly the first of its kind. Before this, there really hasn’t been a classic adult rom-com centered around the queer community. The only popular content that is remotely similar is Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper‘, which is more reserved, in terms of maturity, than ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’.

Number One Movie

The film’s early reviews set it up for success. It’s certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 94% audience score. This is rare for a film focused on queer characters as anyone can submit reviews and similar movies have been ‘bombed’ with homophobic reviews, regardless of whether or not they’ve watched it.

But, ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ went viral instantly. The official poster release got millions of likes across social media platforms, along with sneak peak clips and cast interviews.

The attention only increased upon the film’s release. The praise from those following the film drew in those who were not familiar with the story; making it number one world wide and not just on Prime Video. ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ has surpassed ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ on Letterboxd, which is a popular film social media website (this is a big deal)!
