In a shocking breach of national security, secret U.S. war plans against the Houthi militia in Yemen were accidentally shared with a journalist through a commercial messaging app, according to The Atlantic.

Signal Group Chat

The publication revealed in a follow-up story on Wednesday (here) that these details were shared in a Signal group chat that was intended to be confidential but mistakenly included Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic.

Signal Leak

As further noted here, the attack plan, which had been discussed in the chat, contained sensitive information such as the launch times of fighter planes and drones, as well as the expected timing for bomb drops and Tomahawk missile strikes. As outlined in the article titled “Here Are the Attack Plans That Trump’s Advisers Shared on Signal,” details about the types of U.S. military aircraft used and the timing of recent airstrikes on Houthi militias in Yemen were detailed. However, the texts reportedly did not reveal any information about specific targets, as noted here.

The details were allegedly shared just hours before the planned military strikes on March 15. The breach occurred when Goldberg was somehow added to the “Houthi PC small group” on March 13 and remained in the chat for a few days before leaving.

Despite the leak, both President Donald Trump and other top officials have seemingly downplayed the incident. They insisted that no classified information was shared in the chat, with Trump stating (here), “It wasn’t classified information.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was also involved in the discussions, added, “Nobody was texting war plans. And that’s all I have to say about that.”

Signal Messaging App

While the breach is significant, the decision to publish the plans was made by The Atlantic after officials insisted that national security had not been compromised. However, questions remain as to how the journalist was inadvertently added to the confidential group chat in the first place, which is why the investigation continues.
