As the fresh flavours of spring begin to bloom, it’s time to refresh your glass with an undiscovered spirit—ready, set, sake!

Despite Japanese cuisine continuing to thrive in Canada as seen on the 2024 Michelin guides, the country’s beloved National spirit that captures the heart and culture of Japan remains under the radar.

That’s why Michael Tremblay, a bonafide sake expert and one of only two Sake Samurais in Canada is on a mission to drive awareness to this cultural staple and help sake shine.

Michael wants Canadians to know that sake isn’t just for sushi–it’s a versatile and complex spirit that pairs seamlessly with many dishes and cuisines. A chilled, floral Ginjo is perfect for spring’s lighter fare, a bright Yuzu-infused sake brings a zesty kick to brunch, and a warm Junmai offers cozy comfort on cooler evenings. No matter the season or occasion, there’s a sake to match.

However, awareness and availability of sake remains low in Canada, so the Japanese External Trade Organization and the Consulate General of Japan recently hosted an immersive cultural experience to help Canadians discover sake.

From expert-led tastings with the Sake Samurai, traditional food pairings, and live cultural performances Canadians were educated and enlightened on this hidden gem, growing a new appreciation for the spirit.

Delicious with fresh seafood, seasonal greens, or as an unexpected twist on your at-home happy hour—sake is the ideal way to savour spring.
