A new television series based on the beloved Harry Potter novels is currently in development. Specifically, casting for Harry, Ron, and Hermione took place recently.

Harry Potter Reboot

December 18, 2024- According to Variety, the show is set to debut on Max in 2026. However, until then filming will reportedly take place in the summer of 2025 in Leavesden. The series has a lot to live up to. Specifically, both the book and movies have a dedicated fan base. This is also evident in the cast who still participate in Harry Potter-related projects to this day. Reportedly, the show will dedicate each season to an individual book in the series. The series creators wish to really dig into the character arcs,” and to dedicate more screen time to characters not explored in depth in the movies.

Harry Potter Crew

As outlined in Variety, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director director Mark Mylod, of Succession fame, will be leading the project. In addition, the author of the books J.K Rowling will be serving as executive producer. As outlined in Deadline, Gardiner revealed that they received 32, 000 auditions for the three leads. According to Variety, Gardiner and Mylod have been reviewing audition tapes since December 5th. Moreover, the two wish to shortlist the candidates in January 2025. Other rumored cast members include Mark Rylance as Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. However, casting is yet to be officially confirmed.

Harry Potter Diversity

According to Deadline, the show’s casting director Lucy Bevan released a much-publicized open call-out for children between the ages of nine and eleven as of April 2025. However, what is interesting about the call-out is that it favorsinclusive, diverse casting. For example, Bevan asked for each agent tosubmit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, and gender identity.”This has served as a major talking point amongst fans as J.K Rowling has faced recent criticism for lacking diversity in her books. In addition, as outlined in Variety, the author has also faced criticism over anti-trans remarks online.
