From friends to lovers and a marriage spanning two decades, see Angela Bassett and Courtney Vance’s inspirational love story.

Since marrying on Oct. 12, 1997, the couple had a romance as close to a fairytale as it’s possible to be.

And 26 years and a set of twins later, Bassett and Vance’s relationship continues from strength to strength.

But how did they do it?

Well, I think their Insta post celebrating their 25th anniversary last year summed it up quite nicely.

“We’ve had ups, we’ve had downs; we gained two amazing children; but lost cherished family members and friends…”

“We’ve had successes, we’ve had failures; we’ve had spectacular wins, we’ve had devastating losses…”

“But through it all there’s been one, beautiful constant: We’ve always had each other!”

Bassett revealed the secret to her successful marriage.

And it came down to one simple thing- “marry the right person.”

But that’s not all though, Bassett said it’s just a matter of making sure that as a couple, you’re both going in the “same direction.”

But how did they know they married the “right person?”

First, Bassett and Vance spend time together doing things they both enjoy?

While the couple tried solo projects, they admit that they just keep coming back together. (I can’t even with these two).

Secondly, can they spend time apart?

Absolutely, Bassett once said, “we have our individual dreams and desires and hopes and ways of doing things.”

Thirdly, do Bassett and Vance have a strong sense of trust?

They are partners in their own production company and have stuck by each other through every one of life’s obstacles.

Fourth, do they share values and goals?

And lastly, do they help each other become more successful?

Vance said it best that despite the initial “we made it but what about me” moment, it came down to one thing.

“We’re better together and stronger together.”

So yes, Bassett and Vance are all these things in spades. It’s no wonder they’ve been called #couplegoals.
