Former Disney Channel actress and current Ph.D. student Bridgit Mendler announced on X- formerly known as Twitter- the founding of her new space startup, Northwood. The company aims to build “a data highway between earth and space” according to Mendler.

Per Mendler’s X post, the company is currently being supported with a $6.3 million seed by Founders Fund and a16z, two venture capital firms specializing in technology.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us but that’s the fun part,” Mendler, whose LinkedIn page identifies her as CEO of Northwoods, said in her announcement.

According to Northwood’s website, Mendler founded it in 2023 alongside husband Griffin Cleverly and Shaurya Luthra after a vacation to Northwood Lake.

A recent CNBC interview revealed that Mendler, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at MIT and a JD at Harvard, “completely fell in love with space law” during a stint at the Federal Communications Commission’s Space Bureau.

The company aims to build an earth-space data highway that allows “new and old systems to work hand in hand in the most convenient way possible.” Northwoods aims to develop mass-produced ground stations to connect ground antennas to space satellites.

Mendler is a former actress and singer most known for starring in Disney Channel TV shows Good Luck Charlie and Wizards of Waverly Place alongside Selena Gomez.

According to her IMDB, her last acting credit is from 2019 as Emmy Quinn in the TV show Merry Happy Whatever.
