Physical events have been making a cautious but steady comeback as the virtual world has gained prominence over the past two years, and Chanel’s Métiers d’art collection was the most recent to be presented to a physical audience.
On December 7, 2021, the Chanel 2022 Métiers d’Ar show took place at le19M in Paris, France, a location that has been consistently supported by the Maison.
A teaser for the collection, which showcased eight models wearing the house’s classic designs, was unveiled before the show. Haute couture at its finest.
The collection still includes essential pieces for the brand. The clothes, which ranged from tweed coats to embroidered fabrics, reflected the contemporary woman’s modernity and sophistication. Each style in the collection was designed for a seasonless approach and features a number of desirable products.
The accessories embodied muted tones and were embellished with vintage-inspired accents. These classic items, which included pearls, sequins, and leather gloves, aggressively complemented each outfit.
Virginie Viard, creative director of Chanel, stated, “I wanted each model, drawn by a different illustrator, to represent one of the Maisons d’Art and evolve in a little story inspired by a Chanel icon,” I tried to depict each House as accurately as I could, yet with an own twist.
“Many of the embroideries are inspired by the structure of the building itself, such as those by Montex, which are very graphic and in silver sequins.”
The Métiers D’Art, which Coco Chanel founded, brought together skilled craftspeople from all over the world to create opulent items that would endure the test of time. Participants included embroiderers, goldsmiths, glove makers, tanners, leatherworkers, and more.
An intuitive masterclass held by Bruno Pavlosky, president of Chanel’s fashion activities, where 200 students had the chance to learn from him, added to the show’s opulent air. Their overarching vision was echoed by a number of keynote speakers, including Caroline de Maigret and Pharell Williams.
