Donald Trump’s potential bid for a third term as president is stirring up considerable speculation, with some of his supporters arguing that a constitutional loophole could enable him to allegedly serve again.

According to a circulating theory outlined in this BBC article, the 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two elected terms, does not specifically address the issue of “succession.” Proponents of this theory suggest that Trump could run for vice president in the 2028 election. If the ticket wins, the president could resign shortly after taking office, allowing Trump to step in through the line of succession.

This theory has gained traction among certain figures. As the article goes on to explain, the notion has also found some political support, such as from Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles, who introduced a resolution in January calling for a constitutional amendment that would permit presidents to serve up to three terms, as long as they were not consecutive. Under such a proposal, Trump would be the only former president eligible for a third term, given that his previous terms were non-consecutive.

“There are methods which you could do it,” says Trump, recently, hinting at potential ways to secure a third term despite constitutional limits. He also claimed he is “not joking” about this idea of a third term presidency.

Has a US president ever served three terms?

According to sources online. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, born on January 30, 1882, and serving as the 32nd president of the United States, held office from 1933 until he died in 1945. He is the longest-serving president in U.S. history, having been elected to more than two terms.

As mentioned here, the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, was introduced to limit the number of terms a U.S. president can serve. The amendment was a direct response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms in office, which broke the tradition set by George Washington of serving only two terms. The amendment states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” effectively preventing any future president from serving more than two elected terms in office.

However, it doesn’t prohibit a president from serving additional time if they were to finish out another president’s term due to succession.

Despite the growing discussion around this idea, its legality remains unproven, with no confirmation from Trump or his team and no court ruling on the matter. Public reaction is divided, with some seeing it as an innovative solution to the term limits, while others view it as an overreach, raising concerns about undermining constitutional principles.

Trump’s divisive role in American politics continues to fuel online debates, with many speculating on what a third term could mean for the country. However, for now, it remains a theory with no official legal clarity.
