Moving to New York

When Madonna arrived in New York City in 1978, she had little money, no connections in the music industry, and no guarantee that her dream would succeed. She later recalled arriving with just a few dollars in her pocket and taking whatever jobs she could find to support herself while pursuing dance. She worked as a waitress, model, and hat-check girl, all while attending dance auditions and training whenever possible.

Her first major opportunity came when she joined celebrated French disco artist Patrick Hernandez as a backup dancer during his European tour.
