And it all began on Tuesday after the magazine unveiled the limited-edition cover.

The dispute kicked off after the photographer on the shoot responded to a fan comment to defend the photo.

“Man, she wanted to be in control of the retouching, so this is what we got.”

However, Lil Kim disagreed with the photographer saying, that that’s not how it happened.

“That’s not the photo I approved or any other content they’ve put out,” she said on Instagram.

Furthermore, she had insisted that it’s sabotage after they ignored her claims it “looked like a painting.”

What people are saying about the cover.

Initially, a member of the rapper’s team apparently confirmed what Lil Kim said about the photo selection.

“We have The Receipts Fool!” he said in his post about the photo and added that it wasn’t the one they had chosen.

Also, claims that poor exposure rendered the photos unsalvageable flew between the magazine and Lil Kim and her team.

Meanwhile, fans also took to Lil Kim’s Instagram to express their views on the photo misrepresenting black women.

@dboogiii said, “This cover is f* crazy……a black woman emulating a white woman ??I’m not hating because I really like Lil Kim but what she did to herself is sad and for y’all to put her on the cover in representation of black women is crazy?????

But it wasn’t her, was it?

Another user said, “???not putting Lil Kim down but truth is truth how can we celebrate someone who isn’t even in Love with the black beautiful skin they were born in ????‍♀️”

@missariellenicolle said, “Whoever did the editing need to be fired.”

Ebony magazine responds to the backlash.

Issuing a statement through ET, representatives for Ebony said,

“Kim looks beautiful on our cover! We are as proud of it as we are of her. Our limited-edition cover is meant to salute and pay tribute to Black icons, inclusive of 5 major figures in hip hop – and EBONY is focused on that.”

But no matter who is at fault for the cover, put the focus back where it belongs- on celebrating 50 years of hip-hop and its icons.
