Scrunchies are back, better and bigger than ever! Learn all about the evolution of the hottest hair trend, how to style them, and where to shop the must-have accessory.

scrunchies

The 80s called and it’s official- scrunchies are back! The retro hair accessory has been making waves online as one of the hottest hair trends right now.

HOLR is breaking down the evolution of the scrunchie, how to rock them- plus how celebs are rocking them- and where you can shop for the hottest hair trend of the moment.

The story behind the trend

Rommy Revson patented The Scrunchie in 1987 The idea came about because she wanted a gentler version of the metal hair ties often used in the 1980s. As a result, she set out to develop the first prototype. As they say, the rest is history.

Over 20 years later, the trend is still as hot as ever! Not only do they make awesome hair accessories, but they also make for some great arm candy.

Top scrunchie styles to try

These are not your average hairstyles. We’ve rounded up the top elevated scrunchie styles to rock this season and beyond. Check them out below!

Effortless Top Knot

Gather your hair in a messy top knot and secure everything together with a scrunchie. Pull out loose hairs to give it a more tousled vibe for an effortlessly chic look.

The Bubble Ponytail

This look requires 2-3 scrunchies to accomplish. Secure your hair in a typical ponytail with one scrunchie. Then, approximately 1-2 inches down from the first scrunchie, add another scrunchie into your hair. Once secured, pull out the hair between the two scrunchies to create a bubble effect. Repeat these steps depending on how long your hair is for the desired look.

Braided Ponytail

Forget a basic ponytail- add a braid to make it more fun! Depending on the vibe you’re going for, try incorporating braids such as a fishtail or dutch braid. Secure everything with a colourful scrunchie and you’re good to go.

How celebrities are rocking the scrunchie hair trend

How are your hair products long-lasting and eco-friendly?

Founders: All of our products are super high-quality and made to last. Our scrunchies and headbands are handmade in Vancouver using locally sourced materials (many Oeko Tek certified) by our team of fairly-paid sewers, which allows for high levels of quality control and reduced waste. We also produce in small batches to eliminate as much waste as possible and repurpose or donate any products that don’t meet our standards.

All of our clips and combs are made from eco-friendly cellulose acetate (a material created using plant fibers that is more durable and flexible than traditional plastic). Finally, all of our packaging is either recyclable or reusable.

How is Supercrush focused on giving back?

Founders: Supporting locals and investing in our community is at the heart of everything we do. One of our core values has always been generosity and we’ve been involved with many local organizations that are doing amazing things in Vancouver and beyond.

Since the very beginning, we’ve been raising money for our charity partner, Union Gospel Mission, specifically their program called The Sanctuary, which provides support for at-risk mothers. Examples of this in action include our annual Black Friday sale where we donate 20% of all sales, we also donate $5 from the sale of each of our “Mommy + Me” scrunchie sets, and during the pandemic, we donated $5 from the sale of every face mask to UGM. Through this initiative alone, we raised $30,000!

Most recently, in the wake of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, we created a Ukraine Collection on our website where 50% of the proceeds are donated to charities supporting the people of Ukraine.

In addition, we try to say ‘yes’ to other charitable initiatives whenever we can. Charities we’ve supported over the years through our business include One Girl Can, BC Women’s Hospital, Wagner Hills Society, and the Indian Residential Schools Society.
