Already Serving 30 years, R. Kelly Gets Sentenced to 20 Years
Kelly, 56, who was convicted in a New York federal court in 2021 on racketeering and sex trafficking charges, received a 20–year prison sentence. Nineteen years of this sentence will be served concurrently with the 30-year sentence he is already serving, while one year will be served consecutively. He also received a guilty verdict in September on three counts of production of child pornography and three counts of enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity.
Despite a motion for a new trial, the sentence was upheld last week. Before the decision, Christopher Brown, Kelly‘s attorney, read out statements from a victim, ‘Jane’.
Prosecutors Ask for 25 More Years
As reported by CNN, Prosecutors are asking to add 25 more years to Kelly’s time after he completes the 30 years originally sentenced.
“Robert Kelly is a serial sexual predator who, over the course of many years, specifically targeted young girls and went to great lengths to conceal his abuse of Jane and other minor victims,” prosecutors say.
“To this day, and even following the jury verdict against him, Kelly refuses to accept responsibility for his crimes.”
Kelly’s attorneys defended in this statement, “In the unlikely event that Kelly was to survive his 30-year sentence, there is no reason to believe he would re-offend as a geriatric in his mid-80s,” they wrote. “The overwhelming majority of Kelly’s criminal conduct was committed a quarter century ago.”
