There is no better time for best-dressed lists than the Academy Awards!  Being the grand finale of awards season heightens the excitement, and well, amps up the pressure for those attendees hoping to leave their mark and be remembered decades from now in the fashion world.

As always, there were plenty of dazzling looks at this year’s Oscars, but here we discern the ones that have lasting power and the worthiness to hold a spot in our style vaults (Think Audrey Hepburn’s classic Givenchy number at the 1954 ceremony or Nicole Kidman’s satin Christian Dior dress in 1997!) Read on to find out who made the cut!

Regina King

“Pretty-in-pink” was a big theme on the red carpet last night, but amongst the varying Valentine-inspired shades, no one mastered it quite like Regina King in her blush gown by Versace.  We are certainly hopeful that this colour trend will spill over from winter into the spring season!

While stars impressed in pink numbers, there was a far more surprising trend in our midst – cape dresses.

Brie Larson in Celine

Brie Larson stunned in a champagne caped Celine by Hedi Slimane number embellished in sequins, and then there was Natalie Portman whose exquisite black and gold Dior caped dress made a literal fashion statement.

Natalie Portman in Dior

To show support for the eight female directors the Academy snubbed this year, Portman’s cape was embroidered with their last names –“I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in my subtle way,” the actress said on the red carpet.

The red carpet was full of sparkle and shimmer last night with Scarlett Johansson, Renée Zellweger and Janelle Monáe at the forefront.

Scarlett Johansson in Oscar De La Renta

Johansson flawlessly embodied Hollywood, old and new, in a metallic  Oscar de la Renta gown which featured a satin skirt and glittering fringe bodice.

Renee Zeilweger wins an Oscar

Renée Zellweger shone in an off-the-shoulder, white-sequined Armani Privé gown; the epitome of elegance, and in our opinion, an underrated style star!

Janelle Monae in Ralph Lauren

Janelle Monáe is crowned the queen of glitz in her eye-catching dress by Ralph Lauren which was comprised of 168,000 Swarovski crystals and took over 600 hours to make.  Add in the unique touch of the hood, along with the coolness of Monáe herself, and you have the most memorable look of the night!
