Titled You Can See Everything, the A24 documentary was secretly filmed over three years and received a surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday. Shortly after the screening, A24 released the first teaser, giving audiences their first look at the unusual project.

Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes project was kept secret

Rumors that Fielder had been working on a project involving Holmes had circulated for years, but very few details were known.

The secrecy surrounding the film continued all the way through its Telluride premiere. Festival attendees were reportedly required to place their phones in locked pouches before entering the theater, while security measures were put in place to prevent anyone from recording or revealing the film’s surprises.

Fielder co-directed the documentary with Lance Oppenheim, who recently directed Primetime, the Robert Pattinson-led film about To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Fielder and the crew initially entered the Holmes household hoping to understand her perspective. But the project eventually moved beyond conventional documentary filmmaking, incorporating reenactments and other elements that deliberately blur the boundary between reality and performance.

One of the more surprising details to emerge after the Telluride screening is just how close Fielder became to his subject.

Vanity Fair reported that Fielder lived with Holmes and Evans while making the documentary. The experience reportedly left him questioning what was real and how much of what he was witnessing he could trust.

Fielder has also acknowledged that he continues to struggle with fully understanding his experience with Holmes.

The Los Angeles Times describes the nearly three-hour film as moving into reenactments and increasingly surreal sequences, including scenes involving a Hollywood actress whose identity the filmmakers have asked audiences not to reveal.

The filmmakers have encouraged audiences to go into the movie knowing as little as possible, making the surprise elements part of the experience.

That approach is particularly fitting for Fielder, whose projects often play with the boundaries between documentary, comedy, reality and performance.

Elizabeth Holmes’ Theranos scandal

Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 and rose to prominence after claiming that her company had developed technology capable of conducting numerous medical tests using only a small amount of blood.

Theranos attracted major investors and became one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched companies. The company’s claims eventually came under intense scrutiny, with investigations revealing that its technology did not work as Holmes had represented.
