What Are The Blue Ribbons At The Oscars That Celebrities Were Wearing?

Many celebrities at the 2023 Oscars were seen wearing a blue ribbon last night in support of refugees. The United Nations Refugee Agency started the blue ribbon initiative to have people show their support for refugees who have been displaced from their homes.

Actress Cate Blanchett who is one of the United Nation’s Goodwill ambassadors, donned the blue ribbon last night and also made a statement prior to the Oscars. The actress said, “Whenever I have met refugees—in places such as Lebanon, Jordan or Bangladesh, in the UK, or back home in Australia—what has struck me has not been their ‘otherness’ but how many things we share in common.”

Actor Bill Nighy who was also seen wearing a blue ribbon said he wore it as Blanchett’s request to show his support. Other notable individuals seen wearing it were Jaime Lee Curtis, Dolly De Leon and Director Guillermo del Toro. The United Nations said they selected the blue ribbon to show solidarity with survivors and victims of the refugee crisis. Many individuals who become refugees are often victims of conflict and persecution and come from war-torn countries.

Cate Blanchett has previously visited countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Bangladesh and feels a personal connection to the initiative. The #WithRefugees initiative was also supported at the BAFTAs with stars like Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal and others wearing the blue ribbon to the awards show.
