August 12, 2024- According to this article, a girl named Gracie Mae Thompson- age 15- reportedly has gone missing in Texas and has spared widespread concern.
However, there are rumors that this missing persons case could actually be an alleged hoax.

In this Reddit thread, there are claims that this missing persons case has been exposed as an alleged scam.
But how is this seemingly so?
Apparently, as one Reddit user pointed out, the original post/article is reportedly “fake and filled with links that when clicked, install malware onto your computer. That malware can harvest login and passwords for banking and social media accounts.”
As the article above (here) claims, there are some inconsistencies that also line up with this being an alleged scam. Apparently the disappearance date of Gracie Mae and the date she is reported missing is suspicious. As well, there is allegedly differing information circulating about Gracie Mae’s disappearance. Allegedly the post also originated on Facebook and not on a credible news site where information could be further verified.
People have also noticed that there is no clear call to action regarding what to do if Gracie Mae is found- for instance, inform law enforcement, etc.
There are seemingly a lot of discrepancies in the story that don’t seem to add up and are pointing to signs that this could be a scam.

Allegedly, this is a Facebook scam that has caught the attention of the internet, in which it uses an emotional event (such as a missing person) to take advantage of people who come into contact with the post, exploiting their goodwill. As outlined here, in this instance, it is alleged that the viral post includes links to dubious websites that reportedly install adware and attempt to make visitors turn off their VPN and ad-blockers.
People have reported the post as a result of this alleged scam.
