Cameron Sutton Surrenders: NFL Player Faces Domestic Violence Charges.

Former NFL player Cameron Sutton has turned himself into authorities in Tampa, Florida, weeks after a domestic violence warrant was issued against him. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced Sutton’s surrender, stating that he was taken into custody on Sunday night. Sheriff Chad Chronister commented on the situation, saying, “After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in.”

The arrest warrant stemmed from a domestic battery by strangulation charge following an incident at a residence in Lutz, Florida, on March 7. Reports indicate that Sutton allegedly assaulted a woman before fleeing the scene. The woman sustained several injuries, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

Regarding Sutton’s evasion of law enforcement, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office mentioned, “He’s been ducking us. Our deputies have exhausted all leads. He’s got vehicles and a home nearby and he hasn’t been there. He’s turned off his phone.” (also noted here.)

The Detroit Lions organization became aware of Sutton’s legal situation on March 20 and subsequently released a statement indicating their awareness of the matter. They also mentioned that they would continue to monitor the situation but refrained from further comment at that time. Sutton was released from the team on March 21, despite being in the middle of a substantial contract with the franchise.

Sutton, who was previously signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, had been in the midst of a $33 million, three-year deal with the Lions. His surrender to authorities came after his attorney contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on March 25 to inform them of his intention to turn himself in. Sutton arrived at the Orient Road Jail on March 31 to begin the legal process.

Domestic battery by strangulation, the charge Sutton faces, is classified as a third-degree felony and carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, as per reports from the Associated Press and ESPN. The sheriff’s office emphasized that domestic violence has no place in the community and reiterated that everyone, regardless of status, is subject to the law.
