Oscars ‘Best Actor’ Forgets He ‘was chewing gum’

In an interview on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark’, Brody explains exactly what compelled him to toss his gum. “I forgot I was chewing gum!” He revealed. “I can’t chew gum [during a] thank you speech.” He panicked, and the only thing he could think of at that moment was throwing the gum at his girlfriend to get rid of it: “I could’ve swallowed it, but I didn’t think about that. I had to get rid of it somehow.”

Walking up to the Oscar stage, viewers can indeed see the moment Brody realizes he is still chewing gum. He hesitates a moment before spinning on his heels and making eye contact with his girlfriend. Chapman immediately seems to understand Brody’s intent, rushing forward with her hands held up, ready for the catch. This couple’s moment, though perhaps not the most glamorous, was adorable to see. Brody and Chapman are completely on the same page. However, Chapman might want to work on her catching technique if her boyfriend is planning to win even more Oscars in the future. Variety reported that she admitted to fumbling the gum, accidentally letting it land on the Oscar carpet.
