Anne Hathaway opens up about her miscarriage during an off-Broadway play and discusses infertility struggles and motherhood journey.

Anne Hathaway shared in a recent interview with a publication that she experienced a miscarriage in 2015 while performing in an off-Broadway play called Grounded. The play featured her as an F16 fighter pilot dealing with an unexpected pregnancy. Hathaway opened up about her struggles with infertility and the complexities of her journey to motherhood.

During the interview, Hathaway reflected on her Instagram post from 2019 where she announced her second pregnancy and offered support to women dealing with infertility. She emphasized that her path to pregnancy was not straightforward and acknowledged the pain and challenges many women face in trying to conceive. Hathaway explained, “It’s not for a movie…#2 All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love”

She also discussed the difficulty of keeping her miscarriage a secret while performing on stage every night. Hathaway shared, “The first time it didn’t work out for me. I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night. It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine.”

Hathaway’s experience led her to be more open with her friends about her struggles, encouraging them to be honest about their feelings even if they couldn’t always be graceful. She said, “I had to keep it real otherwise. So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’m with you.'”

Throughout the interview, Hathaway emphasized the complexity of the journey to motherhood, noting that there is often a tendency to portray it in a purely positive light. She shared her own realization that sharing her pain and experiences could help others feel less isolated in their struggles. Hathaway also expressed that becoming a mother made her strive to be true to herself and to stop any internal conflicts, leading her to a place of greater authenticity and integrity.
