Australia had their election only several days ago. Similar to Canada, Australians have rejected a conservative approach to politics.

Australia’s current Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, will remain Australia’s leader. This victory comes as a surprise, considering that Albanese experienced a significant drop in popularity at the start of the year. So, what changed for the political leader?

Australian Election Trump

As CNN explained, Albanese leads the center-left Labor party. Meanwhile, his main opponent for Prime Minister was Peter Dutton of the Liberal Party. Specifically, the Liberal party leans towards center-right political ideas. 

Peter was often compared to Trump during his campaign. For instance, Dutton was accused of inciting culture wars and even blamed migrants for issues such as the housing crisis in Australia.

Australian Federal Election Results

Before the election, Albanese was heavily critiqued by Australian media outlets. This was especially true for the increased cost-of-living concerns during his previous term. However, Albanese won the election in a landslide.

Australian Polls 2025

Australian politics uses a preferential voting system. This means that a candidate must obtain more than 50 per cent of the votes in the count to potentially win. This is carried out by Australian voters by listing their preferred candidates on a ballot paper before casting their vote.

Albanese achieved a significantly high 85 seats for his second term. In comparison, Dutton, who lost his place in politics altogether, won only 37 seats.  Most see this as Australians rejecting right leaning Trump style politics. Instead, choosing a more empathetic and progressive approach to running the nation.

“Today, the Australian people have voted for Australian values: for fairness, aspiration and opportunity for all; for the strength to show courage in adversity and kindness to those in need,” Albanese said in his acceptance speech.
