One year ago, parenting advice vlogger Ruby Franke and her podcasting partner Jodi Hildebrandt were arrested and charged with child abuse. Franke started a YouTube channel back in 2015 called 8 Passengers. The channel featured her kids, Shari, Chad, Abby, Julie, Russell, and Eve, as well as herself and her estranged husband, Kevin. Ruby would film most of the family’s lives, which was fun for viewers until Ruby and Kevin’s weird parenting behavior started to be called out.
Ruby filmed herself parenting the children in ways she thought was right. However, a few of those situations are what led to her and her friend Jodi Hildebrandt being arrested for child abuse. Some of Ruby’s “parenting” included taking away beds or threatening the kids with no food. She would also go out of the way to humiliate the kids on camera if she felt they did something wrong or punishable.
Ruby Franke Arrest
Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt were arrested in August 2023. Their arrests came about after Ruby’s youngest son, Russell, went to a neighbor’s house and asked them to call the police. The neighbors saw Russell was frail and malnourished. It was later discovered that Russel, along with Ruby’s youngest daughter, Eve, were being kept captive in a house owned by Hildebrandt. The two children, as well as the family’s middle children, Abby and Julie, were taken into custody by police.
While not much information can be shared about the case, the kids seem to be in a better place, especially without their mother’s influence. On Friday, August 30th — exactly one year since their August 2023 arrests — Ruby’s 19-year-old son Chad observed the anniversary on Snapchat. “Happy Prisonversary,” Chad wrote in one snap, which included a photo of Ruby, 42, taken presumably before her imprisonment. While the joke contains a bit of dark humor, Chad seems happy being away from his old life.
