As Hamlin takes the stage – seemingly wiping tears from his eyes- audience members give him a standing ovation. Months earlier, Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Medical personnel immediately responded to the incident and were praised for their efforts during that day, as mentioned here. Following the incident, Hamlin slowly recovered from his injuries which is why the ESPY Awards was an especially emotional night for the athlete, who some thought originally wouldn’t make it.
