Virginia Teen Fatally Shot While Filming Prank Video, Authorities Say

Ding Dong

A tragic shooting in Spotsylvania County has left a Virginia high school student dead after a doorbell prank, commonly known as “ding dong ditch,” ended in gunfire. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of May 3, 2025, and involved three teens reportedly filming a TikTok prank.

Michael Bosworth Jr., a senior at Massaponax High School, was killed in the early hours of May 3 while reportedly playing the prank with friends, according to NBC4 Washington (also stated here). One of his companions, who suffered a minor gunshot wound, told investigators that the group had been knocking on doors and running away as part of a prank they intended to post on TikTok.

A third teen, who was not hurt, confirmed they were recording the stunt when the situation took a deadly turn. The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star (here) cited court documents indicating that the group had targeted several homes in the neighborhood shortly before the shooting occurred.

As referenced here, according to police, the teens were unfamiliar with the area and were attempting to flee and find cover when gunfire broke out. Authorities responded around 3:00 a.m. to a call about a possible home intrusion in the McKenzie Lane area of Spotsylvania County. The caller reported shots fired during what was believed to be a burglary attempt.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered that two teens had been shot, and a third was unharmed. Bosworth was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His friend received treatment and was released with non-life-threatening wounds. Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be filed in connection with the shooting.

The incident has shocked the community. It has also sparked a wave of grief and questions about escalating tensions and how seemingly harmless pranks can lead to tragic outcomes.
