After her first viral music video, Doja Cat has come a long way. Here are her most fashionable moments of the year.
It cannot be denied that 2021 was Doja Cat’s year. She made an impact not only through her music but also through her impeccable stylistic choices. After appearing in award shows, magazine spreads, and even in her music videos, it’s time we acknowledge that Doja Cat is one of the most memorable performers of this year.
Live Performances
Doja Cat’s live performance outfits are truly an art form in itself. Just like how she keeps reinventing her song “Say So” in every live performance, her look changes every time we see her on-screen. One notable performance and outfit is when she performed “Say So” in a pop-rock version wearing a tattered white custom Eyanatia beaded dress (a la Samara from The Ring). Then for her Grammy’s performance, she wore a custom black Jean Paul Gaultier gimp suit. It doesn’t stop there, for her BBMAs appearance, she wore a custom black and white ensemble courtesy of Balmain. It’s always a pleasure watching her perform because you know her creativity doesn’t stop at her music.
Music Videos
Her visuals as an artist have also come a long way and it just keeps getting better. From her “Juicy” days, she always put a lot of thought into the creative direction of her music videos. In her “Rules” music video, we saw plenty of costume changes from the opening purple outfit to the snakeskin outfit—it’s just too good. Now in her “Planet Her” era, her looks abide the interstellar, out-of-this-world, goddess-like theme of the album. She started this era with Sza wearing a pink Di Petsa Wet Look in “Kiss Me More”, then tuned in to a more futuristic slash alien-like costumes for “Need To Know”, and finally capping it off with her latest music video “Woman” wearing a combination of outfits that took inspiration of Egyptian gods. Doja’s ability to change and always nail the looks are all thanks to her stylist and creative director, Brett Nelson.
Red Carpet Looks
Doja may be extravagant in her performance outfits but she tones it down in her red carpet looks. Quite frankly this is where we see her least memorable looks—all except for when she wore Viviene Westwood at the VMAs at the same night she hosted the show. Her red carpet may not be her strongest but her outfits throughout that night made up for it. She wore several Viviene Westwood dresses complete with the editorial hat chair, a puffy Thom Browne worm look, and of course who could forget the impressive AVAVAV claw foot. It reminds us that not taking yourself seriously is key to making a mark in fashion. Honestly, this night was very on-brand for Doja. The pop star is known for her candid meme-able (read: sh-tposting) moments online so seeing her in meme-able outfits just makes a lot of sense. Besides, it wouldn’t be the Doja Cat we know and love without it.
Magazine Editorials
As an emerging artist, Doja Cat has graced multiple publications in recent years. The most memorable one is her Billboard magazine cover wearing a Sun Woo dress and gloves. The rings in the gloves and at the hem of the dress add to the interstellar vibe “Planet Her” album is going for. She also wore a pleated pink Robert Wun ensemble which made her look so ethereal. Recently, she also graced the cover of Rolling Stone wearing a fully beaded Alexandre Vaulthier couture.
Watching her grow from her “Mooo!” days, it’s certain that Doja Cat is a star in the making—both in music and in fashion.
