The 2022 Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 15th. Megan Thee Stallion, Machine Gun Kelly, Doja Cat and more of your favourite artists arrived on the scene of the BBMAs Sunday night.
Although most of the awards were revealed before the broadcast, American pop star Olivia Rodrigo won seven BBMAs. The most of any artist in 2022. Kanye West won six BBMAs, one short of Olivia’s seven. While Drake took home five BBMAs, including this year’s top artist award. Mary J. Blige was honoured with the Icon Award and Diddy hosted the show. In an interview with Billboard, Diddy said he would like to “un-cancel the cancelled” at this year’s show. Which explains performances from both Morgan Wallen and Travis Scott who have faced major controversy.
Red Carpet Hits and Misses
Machine Gun Kelly & Megan Fox: HIT
‘It’ couple alert! Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox wore goth inspired looks to this year’s BBMAs. The couple is pictured nailing the rock’n’roll aesthetic with their coordinated edgy outfits. Megan looked striking in her intense, V-cut, black gown by David Koma. The actress also sported crystal embroidered, floral gloves, which reach up to her shoulders. MGK seems to be channeling our favourite characters from the Japanese anime series, Yu-Gi-Oh! As he is wearing an over-the-top suit from Dolce & Gabbana full of studs and spikes. They both killed it! Unlike Travis & Kylie.
Travis Scott & Kylie Jenner: MISS
For this duo, the BBMA red carpet became a family affair as four-year-old Stormi Webster accompanied her parents. Kylie is pictured wearing a cool coloured Balmain abstract dress, which isn’t her best or her worst look. It seems a bit overdone at this point. Whereas Travis wore a grey suit with white-and-green Nikes. Which is underwhelming to say the least. We feel similarly about the next look!
Jack Harlow: HIT but also a MISS
Jack Harlow looked dapper as ever wearing a Musika suit. His blazer was dark gray and paired with all-black everything: tie, shirt, pants, and shoes. While he looks great, it’s also a bit of a ‘snoozefest’ as there’s not much to comment on. We were expecting more from the “First Class” singer.
Becky G: MISS
There’s just too much going on here. The lilac coloured Zuhair Murad one-shoulder dress features sequins, beads, studs, and feathers. While we appreciate Becky G for giving us something to look at, this dress simply looks messy. Unlike Giveon’s eye-catching suit!
Wearing Bottega Veneta, Giveon hit a home run with this look. The green, black, and white chevron suit is from the Fall/Winter 2022 collection. This is what we expect of men on the red carpet! Instead of wearing an all-black suit, have fun with some colour. Hopefully Jack Harlow is taking notes for next year!
Megan Thee Stallion: HIT
Wearing an ombré coloured, custom Mugler two-piece set, Megan Thee Stallion was a standout on the red carpet. Cara Delevingne even stood behind Megan giving her instructions on how to pose. She even made the shot lifting Megan’s black and brown train. The internet couldn’t get enough of this moment and Cara was even trolled for her behaviour on Twitter. At least Megan and Cara gave us a pop culture moment to remember the night by! Unlike Florence Welch, who gave us an outfit we’d rather forget.
Florence Welch: MISS
The Florence + The Machine singer stepped on the scene wearing Gucci. Like Becky G’s mini dress, there’s a lot going on with this look. The ruffles and sequins on the sheer purple coloured dress seem to clash with the black lace underneath. Fans of the singer are just happy to see the star out and about. Worst dressed as far as we’re concerned!
Doja Cat: HIT
Doja Cat is the one to look out for these days and she looked magnificent on the BBMA red carpet. Her outfit was Schiaparelli, designed by Daniel Roseberry. It’s giving high-fashion and she’s really cementing herself as the modern Lady Gaga with many of her recent looks. Her quirkiness is really being highlighted as the black gown is paired with gold metallic pasties and a Saturn-shaped purse. Best dressed as far as we’re concerned!
These were some of the night’s best and worst dressed. We’re already counting down to the 2023 awards season.
