As a 2026 bride with our wedding fast approaching, my fiancé and I sat down with a Guerlain fragrance expert to discover how to find the perfect scent for the big day. With a collection of fragrances crafted to suit every style and occasion, I knew the iconic French luxury house, renowned around the world for its exceptional fragrances, was my first and only choice to help mark such a meaningful milestone.
After all, a wedding-day perfume becomes more than just a fragrance–it becomes a cherished memory, forever tied to one of life’s most unforgettable moments.
Step 1: Top Notes
The Guerlain journey of finding the perfect scent is unlike any other.
After initially sitting down with our lovely fragrance expert, Inga, we were invited to select a pot of Sloane tea to enjoy while we went through the process of finding our ideal wedding scent (some of which were exclusive flavours to Holt Renfrew, where our consultation took place). Each step of the consultation, including the tea selection, was intentionally designed to awaken the senses. As we chose the tea that resonated most with us, Inga shared a brief history behind each blend. She explained how many of its aromatic notes echoed the ingredients and olfactory families found throughout Guerlain’s iconic fragrances. It was a thoughtful introduction to the art of perfumery, showcasing how scent preferences can reveal the fragrance notes you’re naturally drawn to before you even begin sampling perfumes.
We ultimately chose Rose—a fitting introduction to one of Guerlain’s most treasured ingredients. Celebrated throughout the House’s fragrance portfolio, rose showcases remarkable versatility, shifting effortlessly from fresh and luminous to rich, velvety, and deeply romantic depending on its composition.
Step 2: Heart Notes
The next step in the fragrance journey involved a thoughtful exploration of our favourite places and times of day. Rather than choosing based on memories or emotions alone, we were encouraged to focus solely on the scents we associated with each setting, selecting only those that genuinely resonated with us from an olfactory perspective. For example, we found ourselves drawn to both beach and city scents. We naturally gravitate towards the freshness of salty ocean air and sun-drenched coastal notes balanced by the clean, sophisticated energy of an urban landscape. When it comes to our favourite time of day, we appreciate the crisp, fresh air that comes with waking up in the morning.
Moving forward, we were also encouraged to smell and select the Guerlain universes that excited us most. For us, this meant the floral and ambery universes–soft and powdery, meet sensual and voluptuous. Finally, we smelled and selected our favourite Guerlinade secret ingredients–which are the House’s legendary olfactory signature. Guerlinade involves a carefully composed blend that forms a recognizable thread and runs through many of the brand’s fragrances. Our top selections included Bergamot and Vanilla.
Step 3: Base Notes
After taking the time to smell and select some of our favourite Guerlain universes and Guerlinade secret ingredients, it was time to cross-reference all of our selections with Guerlain’s lineup of iconic fragrances to find the ones that spoke to us the most. A detailed map of each scent and how it corresponded with each of our answers made it easy to find and select some of our favourite fragrances to sample in anticipation of the big day. From there, we went on a traditional scent journey, smelling some of our top selections and envisioning them on the big day.
While many Guerlain fragrances are beautifully wearable regardless of gender, we naturally found ourselves gravitating toward a few favourites for the bride and groom. We both equally adored L’Homme Idéal Eau de Parfum for the groom, as it layers luscious almond with rich vanilla tincture and smoky leather for a warm, alluring finish.
For the bride, we were torn between L’ART & LA MATIÈRE Pêche Mirage (highlighting captivating fruity notes) and Eau de Tulle. This popular wedding-day scent seems as airy and ethereal as a white tulle veil drifting through the breeze.
This particular scent from Guerlain envelops the skin in a luminous fragrance that blends sugared almond, radiant neroli, and soft white musk.
As soon as we began sampling our curated selections, the experience shifted from discovering fragrances to imagining our wedding day. Certain scents instantly transported us to walking down the aisle, exchanging vows, and celebrating with family and friends. Freshly armed with our newfound knowledge of the important role that scent plays in our everyday lives, we left inspired to choose fragrances that will forever remind us of one of life’s most meaningful milestones.
Our consultation with Guerlain reminded us that choosing a wedding fragrance is about far more than selecting something beautiful to wear. It’s about preserving one of life’s most magical moments in scent. Years from now, one spritz will have the power to transport us back to every laugh, every happy tear, and every unforgettable moment from our wedding day.
