The Amazon Original production The Tomorrow War garners strong performances from Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovsk, Betty Gilpin and J. K. Simmons. While the sci-fi film may hold similarities to other films in the genre, the storytelling lends an original hand as it explores the idea of second chances.
Chris Pratt acts as the perfect driving force for the film as his character is given a redemption arc Hollywood dreams are made of. When soldiers arrive from the future to warn of an impending, gory war with aliens, Pratt’s character is enlisted to join the fight. A former soldier turned science teacher, Pratt is transported to war 30 years in the future. As he leaves his loving wife (Betty Gilpin) and young daughter behind to battle the seemingly unstoppable aliens, he’s provided with a real moment of reflection. I won’t get into the details so as to keep this review spoiler free but this film will take you on a thrilling, action-packed ride.

The cinematography in The Tomorrow War is captivating and really well executed, while the fast pace of the film will leave you engaged the whole way through. But arguably what stood out to me the most is the heart and lighthearted moments throughout the film. In true Chris Pratt fashion, moments of tension are broken up with humour. Both Pratt and Gilpin play extremely likeable characters but it’s interesting to see that even in the happiest of marriages, not everything is perfect. The story also shines a light on the sometimes fragile relationship between a father and daughter–it is perhaps this relationship that gives this film the most heart.

The Tomorrow War also explores the complexities of human nature and how we often begin to take things for granted. But what would you do with a chance to gain some foresight about your life? It’s not every day that we are given a do-over but this film drives the point home that maybe if you shift your perception and intentions that the second chance may not be needed. In a time when there is so much heaviness in the world weighing on us all, The Tomorrow War is one of those films that provides you with a little slice of escapism and entertainment. While the script is something you may have come to expect from a sci-fi action film, it’s an exhilarating story and truly feel-good.
