AI is often seen as the way of the future by tech companies. However, people in creative fields have been highlighting how AI art is immoral and inauthentic.

AI art controversy

Recently, OpenAI created an image-generation tool that allows users to render images into a specific style.

Specifically, the most popular model is in the style of Studio Ghibli. Soon after this was released, users began posting these rendered images of themselves online. However, fans of the studio have highlighted that its creator, Hayao Miyazaki, would be disgusted by this trend.

While the famous animator has not publicly commented on the trend, he has previously spoken bout his feelings towards AI.

“Utterly disgusting” and “an insult to life itself,” Miyazaki once said about AI. The filmmaker has also stated that he would he would “never wish to incorporate this technology into [his] work at all.”

The emergence and controversy surrounding this trend have sparked further discussion about art and AI. Specifically, art created by AI will never be original, and it will always take credit from a real person.

While AI might be good for doing a quick fact check, at the end of the day, it is not a person. In fact, AI relies on external input and an algorithm to evaluate whatever you’re asking it to do.

This is the same case for AI art. Except it uses art available on the internet and imitates that style.

For this reason, creative practitioners have been concerned about how this will impact their craft. For instance, AI essentially steals from artists and seemingly gives them no credit or profit for these images. In addition, the development of AI is not just impacting visual artists; musicians are also actively taking a stance against it.
