Elton John has lost his vision due to an eye infection. However, the singer has publicly thanked his husband, family members and healthcare professionals who have supported him through this process.

December 18, 2024– According to The Guardian, the musician revealed at one of the performances of The Devil Wears Prada musical that he has lost his eyesight due to an infection. In addition, as outlined in CNN, John wrote the music for the musical. However, despite not being able to enjoy the show visually, John expressed his gratitude at still being able to hear the performers.“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight. So it’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” said John.

According to The Guardian, John first announced that he was having sight problems in September on Instagram. Then, he stated that he first contracted the eye infection in July during a trip to France. The infection left him completely blind in his right eye. In addition, the singer now has limited vision in his left eye. However, according to CNN, John thanked his husband, David Furnish, for his ongoing support. John described his partner as being ” my rock.” Moreover, John also thanked the “excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family” for their support.

In a Good Morning America interview (here), John expressed his frustration at not being able to be fully involved in his craft. “So, there’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start,” said the singer. The singer has also retired from touring. Specifically, John announced during a show in Sweden in 2023 that he will be retiring from touring.
