If there’s one thing that the team at Netflix knows how to do well, it’s to curate a bingeworthy list of movies and TV shows. Their International collection is no exception. While travelling may be out of the cards for the foreseeable future, fortunately you can still explore the world with these 10 great International titles.
La Casa De Papel (Money Heist)
Netflix Description: A criminal mastermind who goes by “The Professor” has a plan to pull off the biggest heist in recorded history–to print billions of euros in the Royal Mint of spain. To help him carry out the ambitious plan, he recruits eight people with certain abilities who have nothing to lost.
Season 4 of La Casa just came out on Netflix and I binged it in a weekend. The story and the characters will have you invested from the first episode as you join them on this wild ride.
Unorthodox
Netflix Description: A Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn flees to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians–until her past comes calling.
This 4-part miniseries had me hooked from start to finish with the great acting and the moving plot line.
Women of the Night
Netflix Description: Struggling to raise a rebellious daughter and be a good wife to her ambitious husband, Xandra recconexts with a friend–and rediscovers a talent.
Set in Amsterdam, this show follows Xandra as she suddenly finds herself working as a Madam for a high-end escort service. This show is pretty fast paced and the character flaws really draw you into the show. It challenges you as a viewer because one minute you love the protagonist and the next you’re not so sure.
Elite
Netflix Description: When three working-class teens enroll in an exclusive private school in Spain, the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder.
Another Spanish show which has a bit of a Gossip Girl vibe but with darker undertones. Netflix released the third season last month.
Toy Boy
Netflix Description: After seven years in prison, a male stripper is unexpectedly granted a retrial. Released on parole, he hunts for proof that he was framed for murder.
This is similiar to a Spanish Magic Mike in that male strippers are at the centre of the narrative, but this shows got a lot more going on. It’s a dramatic, sexy thriller with twists and turns and murder.
Fauda
Netflix Description: After retiring from the Israel Defense Force, Doron is working on a vineyard. He gets roped back into active duty , though, upon learning that an enemy who Doron thought his unit had killed is still alive and plans on attending his brothers wedding. Doron rejoins the IDF team with the intention of going under cover at the wedding, but the plan goes awry when the teams cover is blown. That sets into motion a chaotic chain of events and leads IDF into a manhunt to locate and kill the squad’s target.
This Israeli show will have you on the edge of your seat. It’s attempt at portraying both sides of the Israeli-Palestine conflict also makes it an interesting watch. It’s fast paced and gritty.
Gomorrah
Netflix Description: Set in the suburbs of Naples, Italy, the crime drama goes inside the Camorra, a fierce Neapolitan crime organization led by Pietro Savastano. The story is told through the eyes of Don Pietro’s right-hand man, Ciro Di Marizio, whose faith in the family is tested when he realizes how far Don Pietro is willing to go to keep his power.
This show is incredibly well written, raw and has a really talented cast portraying the characters. I’ll go so far as to say, it’s arguably one of the best shows made in this genre in a while.
Outer Banks
Netflix Description: A teenager enlists his three best friends to hunt for a legendary treasure linked to his father’s disappearance.
This is a saucy teen murder mystery that seemingly everyone is talking about today. While it’s an American series, we’re located in Canada so we’ll squeeze this one onto the list. This just got released but it pretty much hooks you from the first episode.
