Inspired by Vintage Romance

Instead of choosing a traditional bright white wedding gown, Roberts envisioned something softer and timeless.

Speaking with Vogue, the actress explained that she wanted to resemble “a little antique ghost doll,” drawing inspiration from vintage treasures, faded fabrics, and old-world romance. That vision became the foundation for the custom Monique Lhuillier design.

To achieve the look, Monique Lhuillier created a custom color called “Vintage Rose,” inspired by Roberts’ middle name, Rose. The gown began as 25 yards of silk chiffon, which was hand-dipped in ecru to create a delicate tea-stained finish instead of a stark white appearance.

Nine Months and Nearly 1,000 Hours of Craftsmanship

Creating the dress was no small undertaking.

According to Monique Lhuillier, the gown required nine months of work and nearly 1,000 hours of craftsmanship before it was ready for Roberts’ wedding day.

The finished design featured:

  • A structured corset bodice with visible boning beneath silk chiffon.
  • A flowing layered skirt with a thigh-high slit.
  • A dramatic draped bustle.
  • A removable lace shawl creating an asymmetrical neckline.
  • A chapel-length tulle veil dyed to match the Vintage Rose fabric.
  • A delicate French lace violette that could be worn over her face or styled like a lace headband.

One Dress, Five Different Looks

One of the gown’s most unique features was its versatility.

Monique Lhuillier designed the dress so it could transform throughout the celebration.

Removing the lace shawl revealed a completely different strapless bridal look, allowing Roberts to wear multiple versions of the same gown during the day.

“There are five looks in this dress,” Lhuillier explained during Roberts’ final fitting.

The Unexpected Black Reception Dress

While many brides opt for another white gown at the reception, Roberts went in the opposite direction.

She changed into a black two-piece Monique Lhuillier ensemble from the designer’s Fall 2004 archive, featuring a strapless Chantilly lace corset paired with a tea-length layered silk organza skirt.

“We love doing something that’s a little unexpected,” Roberts said, explaining that she loved how timeless the vintage-inspired outfit felt.

The bold fashion choice immediately became one of the most talked-about celebrity bridal looks of the year.

A Wedding That Reflected Her Personal Style

Rather than following bridal traditions, Roberts focused on creating a wedding wardrobe that reflected her own personality.

From the tea-stained silk chiffon to the antique-inspired veil and the dramatic black after-party ensemble, every detail celebrated her love of vintage fashion and timeless design.

The result wasn’t just another celebrity wedding dress—it became one of the year’s most distinctive bridal fashion moments.
