Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Shonda Rhimes
ABC announced on Instagram Tuesday that the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is renewed for a 21st season. The renewal marks the extension of the show’s position as ABC’s longest-running scripted primetime series and the longest-running medical drama on primetime.
The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, thanked fans on Instagram for having the show “on your screens, in your living rooms, and in your hearts,”
“Grey’s was something I made up 20+ years ago, and I am so incredibly proud that it’s been picked up for its 21st season,” Rhimes said.
Grey’s Anatomy Cast Ellen Pompeo Katherine Heigl Patrick Dempsey
Grey’s Anatomy follows the professional and personal lives of “five surgical interns and their supervisors”, including the main character Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo. Meredith is the daughter of a surgeon and an aspiring surgeon herself. However, Pompeo has decreased her on-screen time since becoming one of the show’s executive producers in 2019.
Pompeo previously said “if I can find some time” that her character will appear more in the show.
“It’s not a complete goodbye,” She reassured fans while speaking to former co-star Katherine Heigl. A former Grey’s Anatomy cast member, Heigl starred as Dr. Izzie Stevens from 2005 to 2010.
The show is known for having big stars such as Wilmer Valderrama, Eric Roberts, and Sarah Paulson make guest appearances.
Since its premiere in 2005, the show has garnered worldwide recognition, most notably one of its former cast members, Patrick Dempsey. Dempsey played Meredith’s husband, Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd for 11 seasons until his character died in a car accident.
