Is TikTok Back in the US?

January 21, 2025 – After 14 hours of TikTok being shut down in the US, the app has gone back online after comments from President Donald Trump.

After losing its case against the Supreme Court, TikTok shut down in the US on Sunday, cutting off its 170 million users. However, after 14 hours, the social media app is back up and running. The one to thank for this return? President Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump Pledges to Bring Back TikTok

On Truth Social, President Trump asks “companies not to let TikTok stay dark!” He says he will be issuing an executive order to delay TikTok’s ban after his official inauguration on Monday.  By doing so, he wants to come to a better compromise between ByteDance and the US.

“I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say [sic] up. Without U.S. approval, there is no Tik Tok [sic].”

How exactly President Trump will turn back a law already brought into effect is still unclear. But, TikTok has taken the President’s assurances in stride and has come back online. On Instagram, TikTok officially thanks Trump for his support.

TikTok is Worth “Trillions”

According to President Trump, TikTok “is worth hundreds of billions of dollars – maybe trillions.”

He suggested an American company should buy 50% ownership of TikTok in order to satisfy the Supreme Court. It is unclear, however, if this would be enough to overturn the official ban.

TikTok users had fled to Lemon8 and Rednote in preparation for the ban. But it seems that for now, they can return to their favorite social media app.
