This Monday morning (February 24, 2025), federal workers at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) were met with a bizarre surprise when they arrived at work. As noted here, hackers had allegedly deployed a fake AI-generated video throughout the building that depicted current President Donald Trump kissing the feet of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The 19-second video, which was titled “Long live the real king,” caught the attention of staffers as they returned to the office in accordance with a new executive order mandating the end of remote work.

The unusual incident, likely intended as a prank or political commentary, raised alarms over cybersecurity within federal agencies.

The use of AI technology to create hyper-realistic videos—often referred to as deepfakes—has become an increasing concern in recent years due to the potential for misuse. The video, which was intentionally provocative, featured President Trump engaging in an exaggerated and absurd act of homage to Musk. The duo have a controversial relationship so it is unclear whether the hackers sought to mock the two public figures, make a political statement, or simply create chaos.

This video drop came at a significant time as federal workers were returning to their offices, following a shift in policy under the new executive order. The prank or hack served as an odd disruption to in-office work, drawing attention to the vulnerability of government systems to digital tampering.

Experts in cybersecurity are calling for heightened vigilance and stronger protective measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, particularly as AI-generated content continues to evolve and gain popularity.
