Season 2 of Honest Renovations– the Roku Original series hosted by Jessica Alba and Lizzy Mathis- is set to debut on August 23rd, 2024.
As working mothers and entrepreneurs, Jessica and Lizzy are using their knowledge, expertise, and experience to help make your house a home in Honest Renovations. Today, we’re sitting down with the dynamic duo, who star in and executively produce the series, to talk about how the show came to be, what we can expect from Season 2, and their top design tips to stay organized at home!
All About Honest Renovations
In the first season of Honest Renovations, we saw Jessica and Lizzy take on the ultimate renovation challenge of transforming family homes. This is the second season of the hit streaming series which stars Jessica and Lizzy, as they help parents by renovating homes that no longer serve their family’s needs. Together, they lead the process after meeting with the families to identify what they’re looking for in a space. Plus, the two are very hands-on during the reno process, in which they help redesign the space, construct work, and design the interior to bring each family’s vision to life.
This season, the pair is looking to elevate these homes and make them more functional by identifying key issues for the family, finding problem-solving design solutions, and making them a reality.
Now, let’s chat with Jessica and Lizzy about the latest Season of Honest Renovations:
Talk to us about Honest Renovations, the Roku Original series you are both hosting. As parents and friends who bonded over your love of design, how did the concept of the show come to be?
Lizzy Mathis: Well, you know, during the pandemic, Jess and I actually did a lot of renovations- randomly. We were doing a lot of content and basically wanted to hang out with each other because nothing else in the world was happening.
We were thinking about what we could do that was creative and still hang out, so it made sense for us to do it. We ended up renovating [Jessica’s] parent’s house which took us two years to do. One of the things we learned through the process was;
- We liked it- a lot! We loved hanging out with each other.
- We thought, how could we bring everything that we learned and knew from design to being parents of three each to other people? We had an idea to create this show and it was something we felt super passionate about.
What can we expect when tuning into Season 2 of Honest Renovations?
Jessica Alba: I think you’re gonna get great before and afters on Season 2. You’ll be able to see a wide range of diversity with families in terms of everything from a single mom with a baby to multi-generations living in the home with growing kids- from smaller kids to tweens. We also have college-age kids coming back home and families with teenagers living at home.
We have many different types of families [on the show] from one child to several in a house. There are different dynamics, ages, and stages of families- which is super relatable. It’s also cool to see that on TV. As well, there are different aesthetics- some people love traditional coastal while other people are into funky and bohemian looks. Other families like things to be a little more modern. We are able to show and showcase different design aesthetics and different family dynamics.
Lizzy and I- because we’re real friends- you get to see our banter, and back and forth. You get a bit of comic relief in between the sweet and tender heartfelt emotional moments.
I love how hands-on you both are in the series! How is it working together on the show and combining forces to create these incredible spaces for the families you work with?
Lizzy Mathis: Well, [Jessica] over here is a little more Gung ho so she like gets in there and is ready to hammer, drill- she just goes straight in for it! I’m a little more, “Let’s see what’s behind the wall, let’s knock and test some things- let’s make sure we have some protective gear on!”
So it’s just funny to see how we approach it differently.
How do you think a fresh, new space can offer a new beginning?
Lizzy Mathis: Well, sometimes I don’t think you get to do a fresh new space all the time. I think that’s something that is important to realize. When you have a design team that’s able to come in and re-do a whole space that’s amazing. It can offer solutions you never thought possible in terms of different designs, and layouts that you might not think about otherwise.
I think at home, it’s important for our viewers to think about what they can do in their spaces. That’s something we are very passionate about- we want to offer tips and tricks that the audience can do at home. We want to inspire and we want people to see this show and- of course- feel like the before and afters are amazing and that the things we are doing for the families are transforming their lives. However, we also want them to feel empowered and take these things and think that they can do it at home too!
Jessica Alba: I think no matter if you’re single or if you have a big family, you can get tips and tricks from our show, for sure.
What are your favorite design tips for parents and families looking to get more organized?
Jessica Alba: I would say declutter and get good containment- don’t be afraid to buy little storage bins and label everything! That way, you know everything has a place. If it’s labeled, there’s no confusion and everything can go right back where it goes. The more kids you have or people coming in and out of the house, the more important it is to be organized.
Lizzy Mathis: Don’t be afraid to use random things as storage spaces that you never would normally use. Use your media cabinet, and your storage cabinets,-use everything, and organize all of your spaces!
