Worldwide Korean sensation BTS bring their “superstar glow” to Butter, their new retro synth-pop dance track, perfectly fresh for the summer. Released on May 21^st, Butter gets your feet moving and head bouncing with its upbeat and pleasant vibe. With their super smooth vocals (dare I say smoother than melted butter?) they make the song an electrifying listen.  It melts your senses, flooding your mind with magic. The different musical layers work in beautiful harmony, with lyrics that are catchy and easily learned.

The music video brings glamour with beautiful colours, camerawork and exquisite costumes. Throughout the video, BTS strike a fine balance between new levels of sophistication, maturity and confidence juxtaposed with youth and summer fun. BTS never fail to mention their appreciation for their fans: ARMY. The septet made sure to highlight the special bond they share in both their song and MV. Hearts everywhere melted watching RM say the line “got ARMY right behind us when we say so” while the members’ bodies spelled the word.

Butter is the group’s second fully English song after Dynamite, that went viral last year, even bagging them their first Grammy nomination.  Butter is already breaking every Dynamite record, topping iTunes and Spotify charts worldwide. Butter’s music video broke BTS’s own world record for biggest YouTube music video premiere ever. YouTube has confirmed that Butter MV set the all-time 24 hour music debut record with 108.2 million official views on its first day of release. The song also made the largest debut in Spotify history.

BTS songs are known for their hidden or deeper lyrical meanings, coupled with their dynamic musical styles. This time Butter allows listeners to escape, letting go of their worries and thoughts, and just dance, desperately need in these confining times. In the words of member Jimin, “Instead of a heavy or profound message…it’s smooth like butter…It’s a very cute song.” During the Global Press Conference on the release, member J-Hope also spoke about Butter’s overall cuteness appeal, stating that the performance tries to reflect the song’s energetic nature, and asked people to keep their eye on the choreography for certain fun and mischievous moves.

Leader RM also expressed his fond hope that Butter would become 2021’s summer anthem. With its refreshing funky beats, urging one to get up and “sidestep right-left to the beat”, this seems more than a possibility.

BTS are set to perform their single for the first time on the 23rd of May at the Billboard Music Awards, where they have been nominated in 4 categories.
