December 11, 2024– Art News states that one of the pairs of ruby slippers that Judy Garland wears as Dorothy now belongs to a lucky bidder. In addition, with the auction fees tagged on, the bidder will pay 32.5 million. Other sold items include a hat Margaret Hamilton wore in her equally iconic role as the Wicked Witch of the West. The hat reportedly sold for 2.93 million dollars.

In addition, interest in The Wizard Of Oz has revised after hype started for the Wicked movie. The film will star Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as different takes of The Wicked Witch Of The West and Glinda The Good Witch

As outlined in The Guardian, Heritage Auctions estimated that the slippers would draw around 3 million or more. However, the bidders present at this event tripled that estimate within minutes.

While filming The Wizard of Oz, Garland reportedly wore several copies of the iconic red shoes. However, only four have survived, with one pair being at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

Ruby Slippers Stolen

As stated in the Guardian, this particular pair of ruby slippers have been stolen before. The thief is Terry Jon Martin, who decides to steal the shoes because he thinks they are made up of real jewels. According to his attorney, Martin stole the slippers to have ” one last score.”
