Shawn Mendes’ photo of wildfire smoke for “What the Hell Are We Dying for?”

Shawn Mendes uses a picture of New York City consumed in clouds of wildfire smoke that were blown from the Canadian wildfires to promote his new single “What the Hell Are We Dying for?” The ‘Stitches’ singer released his new song at midnight ET Friday, June 9th. Although some fans were excited to see Shawn Mendes’ comeback, others were not happy as they felt he exploited a natural disaster to promote his new song. Fans left criticizing comments as one fan commented, “ppl are dying in wildfires n getting sick by the poor air quality n u rlly decided to make it ur aesthetic?”

Other top comments emphasized that he used the wildfires to promote his song as fans commented, “canada burning was just shawn mendes promo??” and “Why are you trying to profit off a natural disaster.”

In a second Instagram post to promote “What the Hell Are We Dying for?”, Mendes wrote, “Started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate New York & finished it only a few hours ago..felt important to me to share with you guys in real time ♥️♥️” Shawn Mendes further adds that he will be donating to Canadian Red Cross and encouraged his fans to donate as well.

Is Shawn Mendes still with Camila?

What made fans more angered was that the song was not about the current wildfires in Canada, but supposedly about his ex Camilla Cabello. The two started dating in July 2019 and ended their relationship in November 2021. Earlier this year, the two tried to make things work again but last week their relationship reportedly ended.
