August 29, 2024– People are questioning whether or not Kuala Kumpur is sinking after a sinkhole opened up on August 23 and swallowed an Indian tourist, as noted here. The sinkhole the tourist fell into was approximately 8 meters deep. The victim was Vijaya Lakshmi, from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh state (48 years old.)
However, new fears arose following a second sinkhole showing up at Jalan Masjid India on August 28 only 50m from the original sinkhole site on August 23. The street has since been cordoned off and there is an investigation underway.

As the video notes, there are theories that this new sinkhole occurred due to heavy rain and storms from the night before. The Department of Mineral and Geoscience Malaysia conducted a soil structure inspection using ground penetrating radar surrounding the location, as a result of the sinkholes appearing.

This initial video posted by the same TikTok user states how rescue teams and a K9 tracker are trying to find the woman, who ended up disappearing as the ground swallowed her.

The tourists’ whereabouts are unknown, but there is a search underway. This article states that authorities claim a portion of a large concrete sewer at the bottom of the sinkhole was broken. As a result, it is presumed Lakshmi may have fallen in and has since been swept away.
