Gigi Perez is the newest arrival in the indie folk scene. However, the singer has quickly become a fan favourite, with her viral hit ‘Sailor Song’ gaining half a billion Spotify streams.

27th March, 2025-Perez, 25, was born in New Jersey and raised in Florida. The singer was originally interested in acting and drama; however, she decided to pursue a career in music instead. The self-taught musician found success in 2021 with her single ‘Sometimes (Backwood),’ which went to the top of the US streaming charts.

Due to the song’s success, Perez formed a contract with Interscope Records, which resulted in her opening for Coldplay. Despite her initial success, the singer has been open about how the experience felt limiting for her artistry. Specifically, the songwriter felt “stuck ” because she felt like she was not progressing musically.

“It was this cognitive dissonance where I’d get an amazing slot [on someone else’s tour] but didn’t know who’d be coming to the show,” Gigi said in an interview.” I asked God, or the universe, ‘Open the doors that need to be opened and close the doors that need to be shut,'” she continued.

Interscope Records let her go shortly afterward. However, the singer used this opportunity to improve her skills, even learning how to produce through YouTube tutorials. On July 26, 2024, the singer released ‘Sailor Song,’ an acoustic ballad describing her romantic attraction to another woman. While the song was a success on the charts, it actually gained a following before its release on TikTok.

Perez initially teased the song to her TikTok followers. At the time of writing, the singer had nearly 860,000 followers on the platform, which was boosted upon the release of the viral hit. However, the track has caused a bit of controversy due to its sapphic meaning.

“My songwriting is not a democracy,” she wrote on TikTok, “and that applies to every artist’s work.”

Perez is an open homosexual who grew up with Christian parents. Therefore, she has been open about her struggles with faith both in her music and in interviews.
