During Copenhagen Fashion Week, a street style trend was spotted: neon shoes! In bright and joyful colours, neon pieces have been rising in popularity ever since the beginning of the current pandemic, with the return of the 1990s and the 2000s to fashion focus.

Lots of looks added up by neon shoes were seen at Copenhagen Fashion Week street style. Classic neon colours like citric yellow, lime green, hot pink, and electric orange were spotted in different models of shoes, from sneakers to high heels. Some designs appear fully in neon colour, while others displayed just a touch of neon as a detail.

Looking back a few years, celebrities can be pointed out as the first ones to adopt and showcase this trend’s rebirth. For instance, Serena Williams showed up to the Met Gala wearing a pair of Nike x Off White sneakers back in 2019; Bella Hadid appeared on an Instagram post wearing a full Fenty look accessorized with neon green heels in June the same year; Kanye West’s partnership with Adidas dropped a glow-in-the-dark neon Yeezy Boost 350 V2, in mid-2019.

After a few years in the shadows, neon trend has been gaining more space and popularity in the past pandemic year, starting up on clothing and accessories, – highlighting the homemade DIY tie-dye trend – and now moving on into shoes. The return of neon can be attributed to the fashion period we have all been referring back to, the 1900s and the 2000s. Mostly moved by the nostalgia from our teenage years, trends from this period of time have captured the attention of fashion gatekeepers and early adopters, and neon is definitely one of them – especially in evidence on Copanhagen Fashion week’s street style.

Neon shoes can be styled either with very simple and basic looks in neutral tones such as all black or all white looks, serving as a pop of colour or in fully neon outfits for the daring ones. Moreover, neon shoes are usually seen more frequently during summer months, which is the case of this year’s Copenhagen Fashion Week’s street style trend.

Renowned shoe brands like The Attico and Amina Muaddi were some of the first ones to introduce their most desired shoes in neon colours. Tennis ball greens, acid tangerine oranges and fluorescent pinks are just a few of the colours created using the neon trend. Besides, the Balenciaga Spring 2021 collection envisioned by Demna Gvasalia presented the so-called pantashoes in bright neon tones of green.
