The National Film Registry now has 900 films in its collection, after adding 25 more.
National Film Registry 2024
December 20, 2024- According to USA Today, the institution has added 25 more films to its collection. As outlined in Smithsonian magazine, this year’s picks range across genre, tone, and period. Classic films added to the collection included Dirty Dancing, Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan, Beverly Hills Cop, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The National Film Institute Voting
According to Smithsonian magazine, picking these films is a careful and deliberate process. In addition, the process is full of debate and includes input from audience members. This year 6,700 film films were nominated by the public. However, only 25 films came out victorious. Jacqueline Stewart, the chair of the National Film Preservation Board, said this about the process in a recent news release. “The wealth of American film history is sometimes rather overwhelming, and people often wonder: how do you recommend this film or that film?” “It’s through a lot of research, conversation and discussion, and it’s through a commitment to showing the true diversity of film making.”
National Film Institute Diversity
According to Smithsonian magazine, this year is significant because it includes actors and directors of color. For instance, five of these movies had black directors, which includes Uptown Saturday Night and Compensation. In addition, five of the films had Hispanic actors and stories, which included the hit family film Spy Kids.
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden reflected on why this is important in a public statement. “Films reflect our nation’s history and culture and must be preserved in our national library for generations to come.” “We’re honored by the responsibility to add 25 diverse new films to the National Film Registry each year as we work to preserve our cultural heritage.”
It has been an interesting year in film, with critics and audiences looking forward to 2025 releases. However, critics and audiences agree that it’s important to acknowledge classic pieces of art. According to USA Today, audiences can submit submissions for next year through the Library of Congress Website.
